How to Avoid Annual Goals & Escape Information Overload

Congratulations are in swift order. You have crossed from the year 2022, into the year 2023 !

As with every New Year, expectations are high and spirits are up. It seems that from this vantage point, one can bleach away mistakes of the past year and finally achieve some initially impossible goals.

And indeed some goals will probably be be achieved but in the same measure, if we are to be 100% honest with ourselves -in 3 to 6 weeks, the obligations of life will take over and most of your 2023 goals will be abandoned all together.

What are these goals, you ask? Losing weight, changing a diet and exercising more - the goals that involve the re-shaping of our outward appearance are the MOST popular. And it t doesn't matter which country you research on, the results will mostly be the same: these 3 top the list.

But why do we start our New Year on such a high and on such promise only to give up and fall lower than we expected? Why do we time and again, fail on our resolutions? It would be tragic if it wasn't so comical.

The problem is: we have a list of goals and we spend too much of our time researching on these same goals on Internet, instead of just starting off on these goals.

The solution is: for 2023, stick to just ONE GOAL and reduce your Internet time by up to 40%.

Let me show you how you can do this, exactly:

  • This year, 2023 - ditch the list of goals and just stick to one goal

You heard me right. Quit overloading your mind. Quit giving yourself numerous goals that will only serve to over burden you. Instead, 'trick' your brain into achieving just one goal that can then have an over-flow effect on other areas of your life.

Look at your current list of goals, drill down to the top 3 most important ones on that list and then pick only ONE goal from the 3. The one goal that is most important to you.

Achieving this one goal will be your focus for 2023, as you go on with other areas of your life.

And you will also notice a few exciting things in the process of focusing on just one goal: your sense of self worth will go up, your mental health will vastly improve and how you show up for other areas in your life, areas not on your goal list but areas that are still part of every your day life - will improve in a powerfully different way.

I do not know what your one goal is for 2023 and I cannot suggest one for you either. That is your personal matter. But whatever this one goal is: note it down, commit to it and track it.

  • Reduce your Internet Exposure by up to 40%

Anxious, stressed, confused, frustrated, feeling like an imposter or failure, ugly, overweight, unintelligent, unworthy, broke and just below average in the human race?

Here is a simple solution to your self-imposed stress: reduce the time you spend on the Internet !

And yes, the Internet means all that stuff on your phone and the movies on your television too.

I will not go into the details of the negative effects social media is having on your life: I have done many blogs on this in the past and there are millions of articles on the internet you can access on the same. What I will do though, is share steps on HOW TO reduce information overload from the Internet. You see, this information overload is the exact reason you will struggle to achieve your one 2023 goal.

Here are 10 steps to manage, hopefully break - your social media and internet addiction:

No 7 can be adjusted to an applicable amount for your schedule.

  1. Be aware of how much time you’re spending on social media

  2. Utilize the mute (or unfollow) button or unsubscribe from unhelpful sites

  3. Don’t check your phone before 10:00 am, don't check your phone after 10:00pm

  4. Turn off all mobile notifications

  5. Adopt a No-phones-at-the-table policy

  6. Get an accountability partner

  7. Use Screen Time (or another timing app) and plan to be offline up to 3 days/week.

  8. Leave your phone in another room during the times you are on an Internet-fast

  9. Change the location of social media apps in your phone

  10. Commit to communicate more in person (or with a phone call)

There you have it !

Now, this will not be an easy adjustment to make but nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

So with less time on the Internet and more on time our betterment, here's to a new 2023.
